It's my understanding that what the Russians really lacked was the precision milling equipment used to make them. Until a Japanese company sold it to them, that is.

Perhaps the individual state of each observed propeller could give a clue of identity by 'unique' sonar signatures. Besides missing sound 'proofing' tiles etc.

The best thing is to build submarines with no propeller! From the Swiftsure class onwards ( 1973) the UK submarines had pumpjets. (Like the Virginia s have now)

I am not sure of the Seawolf class but I don't think the los Angeles class had them. The inclusion of pump jets in the Virginia class is listed as one of their advances.
